I had the same problem with a directed d2400 amp. That means that you need to take it in. There is probably a bad transistor or your terminals are bad. I would have someone look at it. Especially since your amp is like 2000 new

I bought d5000 with high expectations, but heres the skinny. this amp is very powerful on 4 subs at 1 ohm and i cant complain about that. but i initally had a glitch with mine. it would sometimes turn on with low out put volume. called directed electronics about it with little help so i took it to an orion dealer. they had similar problem with this amp. what was happening is that if input voltage drops below 10 volts when the amp is turning on it will do this and it can happen faster than your DMM can read it. so i paid 30 buck to program the remote turn on time to 4 seconds as this amp has a micro controller in it and it cleared up the problem. my radio was trying to turn the amp on while i was cranking my truck and voltage was low at this time causing this. second thing is if you get an error code like under or over voltage or current ect. as this amp will sense this it will leave the lit logo on until when you turn your vehicle off untill you recycle power to the amp to clear it. so if its in your trunk and you leave your vehicle for a few days, Walla!! dead battery. directed says this is normal operation!.......ok?right? but sound quality is above average and power is oh so good. it wont disappoint! oh almost forgot, no milspec parts inside like the old school orion just the cheap radio shack type stuff but it works.

Recheck your sub impedence the way they are wired up. Probalbly below 1 ohm. Smell could have come from voice coils.

or

also check whether your ground screwed tightly to bare unpainted metal? also check each sub to make sure one of them didn't blow. if they share the same chamber in the box you wont know if one is blown because it will still move when the others hit. if one IS blown it would change the total ohm load that your amp sees
